Degree Program Highlights
The master program in Folk Studies is a humanities-based, interdisciplinary program that exposes students to various aspects of folklore, folk medicine, and folk religion across the globe. Students learn how to analyze folk culture and oral traditions including folktales and proverbs in specific cultural contexts. They also learn how to research and reflect aspects of individual folk cultures.
Understanding culture as a dynamic process that guides life, interpretation, and self-understanding is crucial to comprehending the significant impact of traditions and customs. Experienced faculty in Folk Studies help students to explore the range of traditions, beliefs, rituals, and physical objects that make up folk culture. They also gain an appreciation of the ongoing process of adapting, reclaiming, and creating new folk culture. Developing the ability to observe and understand a culture in a deeper level prepares missional leaders to serve more effectively among the oral learners of folk culture.

Choose a Specialization in Global Cultures
Mission always occurs in a cultural context. The programs "in Global Cultures" are designed to enable the student to reflect on the "where" and the "with whom" related to their academic discipline. Below are nine very specific sociocultural contexts -- all with an overlay of the spiritual dimension. These cultures may found all over the globe but are predominant in specific geographical regions.
The "in Global Culture" specialization allows you to enhance your degree program to be better prepared to serve in the location to which you have been called. Students have the opportunity to include one specialization from the list below. Or, students may choose a program-related specialization (see the Specialization tab above for details).

Choose Experiential Learning Opportunities
It is one thing to learn information, theories, and methodologies, but it is quite another to synthesize and apply what is learned to specific situations. However, the degree programs at Missional University incorporate specific experiential learning opportunities to bridge this gap. Students are able to customize their master degree programs with practicums, internships, mentorships, research, projects and thesis.
Choose an Experiential Learning Provider
Missional University has a growing list of missional partners who facilitate experiential learning opportunities around the world. In addition, a faculty member of the School of Experiential Learning will work with you in developing the best location and mission entity, nonprofit or NGO, school, church, or church group to further the goals of the student.
