What Will I Study?
We offer the most comprehensive approach to serving among internationals, immigrants and refugees in the mission of God.
An investigation of the biblical theology of mission. The student will analyze three distinct but interrelated areas: The biblical and theological foundations of mission; the Kingdom of God as the theme of mission; and progressive revelation throughout salvation history. The student will be able to construct his/her own mission theological framework.
Introduction to language interpreting (oral) and translation (written), including linguistic communication, translation approaches, problems and processes, cultural competency and ethics, the role of the interpreter, modes of interpretation and interpreter errors. Through readings, observations, case studies, and research, the student will gain an understanding of how to prepare to become a certified/registered interpreter and/or translator.
Exploration of missional life patterns. The student will develop a plan for incorporating interpreting and/or translating into the normal rhythms of everyday life and work. Through readings, interviews, and case studies, the student will discover personal applications for utilizing interpreting and/or translating in life experience.
A general introduction to common legal vocabulary involved in broad, general principles of substantive and procedureal law with particular attention to immigration legal proceedings and communication with a focus on meaning and correct usage. Attention to explaining and restating legal vocabulary in lay terms and to explaining American legal terms to individuals from other cultures.
Advanced sight translation training focusing on court/law enforcement documents. Includes identification of the origins of judiciary terminology, and theory and practice of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation as applied to common judiciary situations. Advanced consecutive and simultaneous interpretation skills building: listening/prediction, analysis, note-taking, recall, positioning, situational control, shadowing and decalage, equipment use and interpreting.
Medical Terminology for Health Services is an essential foundation course for anyone working in or dealing with health services, health care. Understanding the physical challenges of individuals with whom you come in contact will support holistic care, decrease misunderstandings and help with prep of assessments of all types. Knowing and using the terminology provides entre to the care team, individual and family. This knowledge supports the ability to read and interpret important research, health and medical articles, reports and to know whether they are applicable to the patient/client population you are serving.
