The Graduate Certificate in Global Security & International Terrorism equips students to analyze current security issues including risk assessment and management, homeland security policies and procedures, global security and methods to mitigate international terrorism; the prevention, detection, response and investigation of terrorist incidents, and intelligence and counter-intelligence activities. Students develop the necessary skills to develop policies and procedures to secure community safety in their organizations and their wider community.
Increasingly faith-based organizations such as mission entities, nonprofits & NGOs, schools, churches and church groups need someone in their organizations with in-depth knowledge about areas critical to protecting their personnel, property, and community which requires an understanding of border security, security policies, risk management and the prevention, detection, response and investigation of security breaches. The program aims to enhance career skillsets for any personnel who have the responsibility to secure community safety while providing them a biblical foundation in public theology so they can join in the mission of God thru their work. In addition, missional Chrisitan with careers in law enforcement, public safety, cyber security and emergency management will find the information applies in their career also.
Since September 11th 2001, the U.S. Department of Labor has been predicting that the employment of security management personnel will grow faster than all other occupations due to the threat of terrorism. More than at any other time, organizations and governments continue to upgrade their existing security systems or contract with private firms to secure their facilities and provide worker protection. This need is expected to continue as concerns with threats to property and persons in our country and abroad continue to grow in the years ahead. The Graduate Certificate in Global Security & International Terrorism provides a pathway for faith-based organizations as well as public and private entities to develop personnel knowledgeable in security management.

What Will I Study?
We offer the most comprehensive approach to securing community safety in the mission of God.
The role God intends for humanity in developing community and society as part of His created order will be explored. It will examine the theological doctrines of Creation, Fall, and Redemption, and the cultural mandate as the basis for humanity’s involvement in community. Students will engage in analytical discussions, research, and presentations on the theology of Christian social engagement.
This course will provide students with an examination and analysis of how risk assessment and risk management issues relate to community resilience, social, economic and political vulnerabilities, and ethical responses. Students will also analyze the role of public managers engaged in the safety of their local communities to the national level.
This course examines key questions and issues facing the homeland security community. Students will address policy, organizational and substantive issues regarding homeland security and national defense support. The course emphasis will be on issues affecting policy, oversight, and procedures to support homeland security, national defense, and national decision making.
This course will provide a theoretical and empirical understanding and explanation of global security issues, policies, and international terrorism. Students will discuss concepts of security studies, and perform an analysis of current security issues. Analytical approaches will identify terrorist groups, tactics, and examine responses to terrorist incidents, and methods to mitigate international terrorism.
This course provides a deeper analysis and examination of on the evolution and contemporary nature of domestic terrorist threats and violent extremist movements that the United States has encountered over the past several decades. Students will analyze these domestic groups in light of historical, contemporary, and potential future acts of terrorism in order to refine and enhance their knowledge of terrorism prevention, detection, response and investigation.
This course will assist the student to develop an advanced understanding of how to provide spiritual caregiving in crises and disasters and it will equip them to support and/or participate in such ministry in either a professional or voluntary capacity. Emphasis will be placed on the various models of crisis intervention that are currently being practiced.
Optional Additional Courses
This course is designed to increase the analytical understanding of intelligence and counterintelligence activity and the ongoing national security challenges faced by the U.S. Students will develop a comprehensive knowledge of intelligence and counterintelligence analysis, and how various threats affect national security policy and decision-making.
This course will examine the theories of physical protection and conducting vulnerability assessments of critical infrastructures. Students will be introduced to the critical sectors currently identified by the United States Department of Homeland Security and how disruption of these sectors affects civilians and the economy.
This course will provide a thorough understanding of the effects of crises and disasters on local communities and the broader society as whole, including the effects on the recovery process.
This course provides graduate-level knowledge to improve critical thinking and decision making skills required in planning for and the management of disasters and other critical incidents. This course will place an emphasis on the collaboration of various emergency services (e.g. police, fire, EMS, FEMA, nonprofit, and volunteer organizations).
