The Graduate Certificate in Digital Media & Global Storytelling is designed for working professionals who desire to enhance their knowledge and skills in using media to tell compelling stories in intercultural and multicultural settings across the globe. The certificate program introduces the student to the international development of computer-mediated communication and the construction of meaning across cultures. From content creation and curation to visualization and digital deployment, students gain understanding and experience in using culturally-sensitive stories to communicate with and persuade audiences.
The scripture embodies the overarching story of God reaching out to redeem, reconcile, restore and renew creation. As we join in that mission of God, our personal story and the stories of the organizations we serve become a part of the metanarrative of God's work in the world. Missional University's Graduate Certificate in Digital Media & Global Storytelling grounds storytelling in the Biblical story to enable graduates to harnass the power of story for the strategic benefit of faith-based organizations such as mission entities, nonprofits & NGOs, schools, churches and church groups as they communicate to, from and within a variety of cultural settings across the globe.

What Will I Study?
We offer the most comprehensive approach to serving through media in the mission of God.
Examines the Biblical and cultural basis for storytelling as an effective gospel communication method. The student will analyze Old and New Testament examples, will explore differences in oral cultures, and will develop a theological basis for storytelling a contextualized missional strategy.
Evaluates conceptual issues regarding computer-mediated and mobile communication in local and global contexts. Students analyze emerging forms of new media, such as the Internet, mobile media, social media, as well as video games, and theorize about their international development.
Analyzes the complex relationship between the media and society and students evaluate how media communicate, persuade, and construct meaning across cultures. This course recognizes that people gain information about other cultures and people groups through mass media, so it seeks to enable students to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in various cultural contexts.
An evaluation of the process of writing for varied global media with an emphasis on gathering information, writing styles, editing, and organization of written communication for specific global audiences. Students analyze the role of audience and the particular medium in influencing the writing and editing of communication for various media forms. Students identify issues from their readings and develop a practical editing and writing portfolio, including basic newspaper article editing, magazine article writing, blog and digital marketing content creation.
The fundamental premise of visual culture in global society is reciprocal, in that it creates meaning through global flows and that the very foundations of global capital, global culture, and global media are based on the dynamics of visuality, and in the power systems it both affirms and challenges. In this course students use a visual perspective to analyze major historical themes: nationalism, colonialism, cultural imperialism, racial and cultural difference and similarities in society and religion. Students focus on the inter-relationship of visual culture with the development and process of globalization, which forces similarity, and students will examine the role and impact of global cultural flows.
This course evaluates and interprets how narratives can be effectively applied in a range of global contexts and across multiple media platforms to achieve specific goals. Students will formulate effective solutions of storytelling with regard to audience engagement, branding and successful marketing, and combine their new-found knowledge and skills to generate successful storytelling campaigns in either a specific global context or in a multicultural setting.
