Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Creative Communication page. Communication plays a fundamental role in all aspects of life. It is therefore important for those seeking to serve in the mission of God to learn not just to communicate but to learn to do so creatively and effectively. Creative Communication is one of the 6 departments of the School of Experiential Learning (SEL). One of the responsibilities of this department is to provide a structure that ensures that students in the School of Creative Expression (SCE) are an equipped witness in their chosen field of discipline through experiential learning experiences made available to them.

Why Creative Communication?

The Creative Communication Department works via collaboration with the School of Creative Expression (SCE) to make certain that students are growing in their ability to communicate creatively through the use of different media, film and theater studies, digital information technology, digital media arts, music, and ethnodoxology. In keeping with the university’s focus on experiential learning, the department ensures that students enrolled in any program offering of the SCE will be given opportunities to practice what they learned through completion of varied assignments or coursework that allows application of theories and concepts learned in class. Varied experiential learning types i.e., observation practice, participant observation practicum, action learning, action research, and missional clerkships or internships will be utilized to equip students to become effective professionals in their chosen discipline.

Depending upon program requirements, each SCE student is required to successfully complete one or more of the following experiential learning courses: observership, practicum, field instruction, internship, mentorship, capstone, portfolio, project, research and thesis courses.

Why Missional University?

Experiential learning in Creative Communication at Missional University is based on the six core values of the University:

Biblically Based:

The Bible teaches that God created everything (Genesis 1:1). The same God has been communicating with humans in varied ways, such as through the prophets (Heb.1:1), through dreams as with Nebuchadnezzar (Dan.4), through visions as in Daniel (Dan.10), and in one instance, through a donkey as experienced by Balaam (Nu.22). Scripture is replete with examples of God communicating with his created beings in multiple ways. This speaks to God’s creativity. In Christ Jesus, God effectively communicated His great love for humankind. God’s creative ways of connecting with people are also evident in Jesus’ use of parables throughout the gospels.

Missionally Driven:

Missional University is driven by the concept that Christian believers should become part of the missio dei -- the mission of God in this world. The same applies to the Creative Communication department of the School of Experiential Learning. The department will operate in a manner that honors the responsible use of varied media of communication in ways that give glory to God. It will also function in keeping with the university’s passion to faithfully serve in the mission of God.

Interculturally Focused:

As a higher education institution, Missional University celebrates the cultural diversity that exists in the world as a reflection of the creative nature of the image of God in humanity. The Creative Communication department encourages individuals to express their faith in a manner that is consistent with their personal cultural background and in accordance with what is deemed appropriate in their culture.

Contextually Informed:

The Creative Communication department promotes practices that honor diversity, are culturally sensitive and are consistent with the need for clear and contextualized ways of communication as one deals with varied audiences. It makes decisions based on data that take into consideration varied cultural contexts and environments.

Practically Minded:

While understanding basic theories in a given practice is important, Missional University gives equal value to the practical understanding of serving in the mission of God in a given discipline. In keeping with this philosophy,  the Department of Creative Communication commits to providing opportunities for practical hands-on learning experiences that enable students to try out principles they have learned in their online classrooms.

Experientially Transformed:

The Creative Communication Department conscientiously integrates manifold experiential learning components in the courses students take in the School of Creative Expression (SCE). In order to successfully complete their degrees, SCE students are required to complete Observership, Practicum, Internship, and other experientially oriented courses. These learning experiences are designed to better equip students to deal with real life problems in their chosen field. They also empower students to transition easier into their professional careers.
