Welcome to the Department of Creation Care. God entrusted to man the stewardship of his creation. A steward is a caretaker. In principle, human beings are called to take care of everything God created. It is the heart of this department that God’s commission in this regard is valued and carried out in the way it operates.
Why Creation Care?
The Department of Creation Care works closely with the School of Ecological Mission (SEM) in developing experiential learning courses that enable students to apply their instruction courses in environmental studies, ecology & biodiversity, global health and population studies, epidemiology and infectious disease and geospatial studies.
Through joint efforts with SEM, dean and faculty, the department provides course offerings that utilize different experiential learning types such as observation practice, participation observation, action learning, action research and missional clerkships or internships as a means to adequately equip SEM students in practicing their profession and by so doing, fulfill God's instruction to care for his creation.
Depending upon program requirements, each SEM student is required to successfully complete one or more of the following experiential learning courses: observership, practicum, field instruction, internship, mentorship, capstone, portfolio, project, research and thesis courses.
Why Missional University?
Experiential learning in Creation Care at Missional University is based on the six core values of the University:
The command to care for God's creation is mandated in the book of Genesis where it is recorded that after God completed his work of creation, he not only rested but he also "took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and to take care of it." (2:15). As an institution committed to serving in the mission of God, Missional University endeavors to develop students who will be conscientious in ensuring that God's concern for his creation is upheld.
Missional University is driven by the concept that Christian believers should become part of the missio dei -- the mission of God in this world. The same applies to the Creation Care department of the School of Experiential Learning. The department strives towards being a good steward of God’s resources and creation and does so in keeping with the university’s passion to faithfully serve in the mission of God.
As a higher education institution, Missional University celebrates the cultural diversity that exists in this world as a reflection of the creative nature of the image of God in humanity. The Department of Creation Care encourages individuals to express their faith in a manner that is consistent with their personal cultural background and in accordance with what is deemed appropriate in their culture.
The Creation Care department promotes practices that honor diversity, are culturally sensitive and convey good stewardship. It makes decisions based on data that take into consideration varied cultural contexts and environments.
While understanding basic theories in a given practice is important, Missional University gives equal value to the practical understanding of serving in the mission of God in a given discipline. In keeping with this, the Department of Creation Care commits to provide opportunities for practical hands-on learning experiences that enable students to try out principles they have learned in their online classrooms.
The Creation Care Department conscientiously integrates manifold experiential learning components in the courses students take in the School of Ecological Mission (SEM). In order to successfully complete their degrees, SEM students will be required to complete Observership, Practicum, Internship, and other experientially oriented courses. These learning experiences are designed to better equip them to deal with real life problems in their chosen field. They also empower students to transition easier into their professional careers.
