DEPARTMENT OF BIBLICAL STUDIES

About the Department

The Department of Biblical Studies takes the student from the basic disciplines of Biblical studies to the advanced disciplines of Biblical theology. Starting with courses on Biblical languages, on how to read and interpret the Bible, and historical overviews, the student then learns the Biblical theology of the mission of God expressed in a variety of Old and New Testament genres.

A highly experienced international faculty will take the student to greater levels of Biblical comprehension, personal transformation, theological adeptness, and missional fruitfulness.

 

Areas of Study

The Biblical Studies Department offers students a variety of areas of study, including:

  • The Mission of God in the Old Testament: Students explore the missio Dei in courses on the Torah, the prophets, the history books, OT poetry.
  • The Mission of God in the New Testament: Students explore missional theology in courses on the Gospels, Pauline writings, and the General Epistles.
  • Biblical Languages: Students study the languages in which the Christian Scriptures were originally written: Biblical Hebrew, Aramaic and Koine Greek.
  • Bible Study Methods: Students explore various software and other tools along with various methods of biblical study including inductive methods.

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the Bachelor of Theological Studies with a Biblical Studies Major will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the sixty-six Biblical books, their authorship, contexts and purposes, and primary themes.
  • Describe the overarching missional thrust of the Bible.
  • Compare and contrast Biblical themes and principles with non-Biblical ones
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate Biblical truth both in written and verbal form
  • Apply Biblical principles to all aspects of missional life and ministerial service
  • Identify relevant opportunities for further study, research, and writing in the field of Biblical studies

Students who complete the Master of Theological Studies with a Biblical Studies Major will be able to:

  • Interpret and defend the missional themes of the sixty-six books of the Bible
  • Create teaching resources based on the missional themes of Scripture
  • Design missional and ministry endeavors driven by Biblical missional themes
  • Evaluate and critique contemporary assaults on the veracity and authority of Scripture
  • Create a paradigm for Biblical decision making in life and ministry
  • Justify the integration of the missional thrust of the Bible with other disciplines
